SDCCD Face Covering Requirement
Since the start of the COVID-19 pandemic, the San Diego Community College District has required all individuals to wear face coverings while inside District facilities. This important public health safety measure has helped minimize any spread of COVID-19 in our facilities and during our onsite activities. We thank everyone who has helped protect our safety by wearing a face covering while onsite.
With more advanced and readily available vaccinations and medications, the threat of serious illness from COVID-19 has been reduced. Improvements to our facilities to enhance air filtration and circulation have increased the safety of our onsite activities. Within our region, hospitalizations from severe illness due to COVID-19 have declined sharply, case rates have dropped, and measurements of the coronavirus in our wastewater indicate the lowest level of prevalence of COVID-19 in our communities since before the omicron variant spread widely during the winter last year.
These developments have been discussed extensively with the Board of Trustees, Chancellor’s Cabinet, District Governance Council, the COVID-19 Advisory Group, labor and meet-and-confer representatives, and other stakeholders during the fall semester. Given the current trend, SDCCD will transition to optional face covering use effective Monday, December 19, 2022.
Specific programs, activities, and individuals may be required to continue wearing face coverings based on legal or other requirements. For example, an individual performing work or attending an instructional activity at another organization which requires face coverings must comply while participating with that organization.
If there is a significant increase in the prevalence of COVID-19 in our communities, the face covering requirement may be reinstated.
While face coverings will not be required in most activities, all visitors to a SDCCD facility are encouraged to wear a face covering while indoors and in close contact with others. Face coverings, including N-95 or KN-95 masks, will continue to be provided by the District to all people at our facilities. We also encourage everyone to take action to remain healthy during the winter.
